Brother Emanuel da Costa, O.S.B., will speak to the Oblates of Saint Benedict of Saint Vincent Archabbey at 3 p.m. Sunday, October 19 in Brownfield Room 202, a Seminary classroom. His topic will be Acedia. Early Christian monks used the term to define a spiritual state of listnessless and from there the term developed a markedly Christian moral tone.
Brother Emanuel is from João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil. He earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophical studies in 2022 from Centro Universitario Ingá in Paraná. He began studies at Saint Vincent Seminary in 2023 and was also assigned to serve as socius of novices and postulants at Saint Vincent Archabbey.
Oblates and guests may attend vespers at 5 p.m. in the Basilica and stay for supper in the guest dining room. Following supper, Oblates will meet at 6:45 p.m. in Brownfield 202 to dscuss a book from the current reading list.
