A Study Guide for the Rule of St. Benedict with Reflections for Those Who Seek God will be discussed. On the same days as meetings in Latrobe, presentations on Benedictine spirituality are being held in the Archabbey Basilica Crypt (or, on some occasions, in the Rogers Center with the crypt is unavailable) from 3 to 4:15 p.m. Attendees may also come to Evening Prayer (at 5 p.m. in the nave) and stay for supper. All who plan to attend should phone Father Donald (724-805-2291) in advance since attendance is limited to 25 people during the pandemic.

The January 17 talk will be by Father Isaac Haywiser, O.S.B., on “Silence in Benedictine Spirituality.” Father Isaac has been a monk of the Archabbey since 2009. He was ordained to the priesthood in 2015 and recently completed a master of science degree in marketing from Drexel University in Philadelphia. He has served in parish ministry, in campus ministry and also teaches at Saint Vincent College.

He writes a column on the Sunday Homilies for the Archabbey website, Jednota, the newspaper of the First Catholic Slovak Union, and the Diocese of Greensburg.

The March 14 talk will be by Father Edward Mazich, O.S.B., on “Lectio Divina.” Father Edward has been a monk of the Archabbey since 1995, and presently serves as rector of Saint Vincent Seminary. He completed a doctorate in theology from the University of Oxford, and has been teaching Sacred Scripture at Saint Vincent Seminary since 2007. For those who would like to plan ahead for Oblate events in 2021, the Solemnity of Saint Benedict will be transferred to Monday, March 22, 2021, since March 21 falls on a Sunday. A festive Mass will probably be celebrated at 4:00 P.M. Whether or not the celebration is public will depend on the status of the coronavirus pandemic.

The April 18 talk will be by Dr. Catherine Petrany, associate professor of theology at Saint Vincent College on “Prayer: The Psalms.” Dr. Petrany has doctorate and master of arts degrees from Fordham University and a bachelor of arts degree from Marshall University. She teaches a course on the Psalms and Wisdom Literature, and has also authored a book on the Psalms.

The May 16 talk will be by Father Justin Matro, O.S.B., on “Purity of Heart.” Father Justin has been a monk of the Archabbey since 1984. A former rector of Saint Vincent Seminary, he continues to teach there, while also serving as pastor of Saint Bartholomew Parish, Crabtree. His community service has also included serving on the board of directors of the Union Mission, an area homeless shelter, and assisting with the local food bank. Known for his culinary skills, he has appeared on the television show “Chopped.”

The June 13 talk will be by Brother Gregory Visca, O.S.B., on “Conversatio morum.” Brother Gregory is a student at Saint Vincent Seminary, having made his first vows as a monk in 2019. He is an assistant in the Archabbey Vocation Office and completed his undergraduate studies at Saint John Vianney College Seminary.

He was ordained to the priesthood in 1988 and serves as assistant to the president for mission at Saint Vincent College. He has taught on the religious studies/theology faculty at the College.
